Car lockout
Keys on the seat, doors locked. It is the most ordinary call there is and usually the least dramatic.
What happens
A contractor attends the vehicle and opens it with purpose-made tools that work through the door seal or the frame — no glass, and no prying that leaves a door out of alignment.
Done properly there is nothing to see afterwards. Airbag wiring and sensors inside the door are the reason this needs the right tools rather than a coat hanger.
Before you call anyone
Check every door and the trunk. One is unlocked more often than you would expect. If the car is under warranty or you have roadside cover, that may already include this at no cost to you — use it.
If a child or an animal is shut inside, call emergency services first. That is not a lockout, and they will be faster.
Proof the car is yours
Registration or insurance naming you, plus photo identification. A contractor who does not ask is one you should not want at your car.
It is checked before anything is opened, every time.
If the key is lost rather than locked in
Opening the door does not start the car. A lost last key means making a new one, which for most vehicles means a chipped key and a pairing step.
Say which it is when you call so the right person comes out with the right kit.

Terms on this page
- Laser-cut or sidewinder blade
- A thick blade with a winding channel milled into its face instead of teeth along the edge. It needs shop milling equipment, so it is scanned at the kiosk and shipped.
- Remote head key
- One moulded unit containing blade, transponder and buttons. Distinct from a separate remote riding alongside a plain key, and from a proximity fob with a hidden mechanical blade.
- Key programming
- Writing a key's transponder identity into the car so the two recognize each other. Separate from cutting, and on some makes restricted to the dealer network.
- All keys lost
- Originating a key with none in existence, from the lock or from the key code held against the VIN. It is a much larger job than copying a spare, which is the argument for cutting the spare first.
