Magnetic hide-a-key
A small box with a strong magnet that holds a spare car key out of sight on the car, so a locked-in key does not ruin your day.
What it is
A weather-resistant case that snaps shut around a spare key and sticks to bare metal on the car. Price at kiosk
Where to stick it on a car
- On a flat, clean, bare-metal surface underneath, such as the frame rail or a steel crossmember.
- Away from the exhaust and anything that gets hot, and away from moving parts like wheels and suspension.
- Not on plastic bumpers, aluminium or painted body panels: the magnet will not hold well there.
- Somewhere you can reach without crawling, but not the first place a stranger would look.
Wipe the spot clean first, and check it now and then, especially after car washes or rough roads.
A spare for a push-to-start car
For push-to-start cars, store the metal emergency blade or a spare fob. Remember a fob in the box can still be detected by the car if it is close enough, so mount it well away from the doors.
