Key programming
The step between a key that fits and a key that starts the car.
What programming is
Writing your key's transponder identity into the car's immobilizer so the two recognize each other, and where there is a remote, registering the buttons with the body control module.
They are two separate operations. A remote that locks the doors but will not start the engine is a key that was half-programmed.
On site, or dealer only
Many vehicles can be programmed through the car's own diagnostic port. Some manufacturers require an online security authorisation, and some restrict it to their dealers entirely.
This varies by make, model and year, so it is a question to ask about your specific vehicle rather than one with a general answer.
Some cars need a working key present
A number of vehicles will only accept an additional key if an existing working key is there to authorize it. On those, going from one key to two is routine and going from zero to one is a much bigger job.
Which is the argument for making the spare before you need it.
All keys lost
Where no key remains, programming normally erases the previously stored keys so anything still in circulation stops working. That is the correct outcome if a key was stolen.
Terms on this page
- Remote head key
- One moulded unit containing blade, transponder and buttons. Distinct from a separate remote riding alongside a plain key, and from a proximity fob with a hidden mechanical blade.
- Key programming
- Writing a key's transponder identity into the car so the two recognize each other. Separate from cutting, and on some makes restricted to the dealer network.
- All keys lost
- Originating a key with none in existence, from the lock or from the key code held against the VIN. It is a much larger job than copying a spare, which is the argument for cutting the spare first.
- VIN
- The vehicle identification number, usually visible at the base of the windscreen. It is what a key code is issued against, and it is checked against your ownership documents.
Get this done
Fob programming and car lockouts are dispatched right away, wherever your car is. A technician calls you within 10 minutes.
