New car key

No key at all is a different job from a spare, and a much larger one.

Why this is not a copy

Duplication needs an original to measure. With no key in existence the cuts have to be derived from the vehicle instead, from the lock or from the key code held against the vehicle identification number.

That is originating a key. It takes longer, it costs more, and no kiosk can do it — it is a technician job.

What we need from you

Proof the vehicle is yours: registration or title in your name, plus photo identification. Expect this to be checked properly before anything is made.

The VIN, make, model and year. The VIN is usually visible at the base of the windscreen.

Then it has to be paired

For almost any vehicle from the last twenty-five years, cutting the blade is half the job. The transponder has to be paired to the immobilizer before the engine will run.

Some vehicles allow this on site. Some are restricted to the dealer network. It is the first thing to ask about.

Cut a spare at the same time

The most expensive key you will ever buy is the one you buy when you have none left. A second key made while the technician is already there is a fraction of the price.

It also means this never happens to you twice.

Terms on this page

Valet key
A restricted key that opens the doors and starts the car but not the boot or glovebox. Some vehicles also use a separate boot key entirely.
Transponder
A passive chip in the key head. The car challenges it and the immobilizer releases the engine only if the answer matches. A perfectly cut key with the wrong chip will turn but not start.
Immobilizer
The system that refuses to let the engine run without a recognized key. It is why a car key is a part to be supplied rather than only a pattern to be copied.
Laser-cut or sidewinder blade
A thick blade with a winding channel milled into its face instead of teeth along the edge. It needs shop milling equipment, so it is scanned at the kiosk and shipped.
