Transponder keys
A chipped key is two things at once: a blade that turns, and a chip the car has to recognize. Both have to be right.
What the chip does
Inside the plastic head is a small transponder. When you turn the ignition, the car's immobilizer sends out a signal, the chip answers with its code, and only then will the engine start.
Cut a transponder key's blade perfectly and skip the chip, and the key turns the lock and the engine does nothing. That is the immobilizer doing its job.
Why the kiosk ships these rather than cutting them
A chipped key is a part, not just a pattern. It has to be the right chip family for your car before anything is cut, and the kiosk does not stock an aisle of them.
So the machine captures the key and the vehicle details, the shop supplies and cuts the correct one, and it is posted to you.
Programming is a separate step
Supplying the key and pairing it to your car are two different jobs. Some vehicles can be paired with a procedure you can do yourself; many need diagnostic equipment at a locksmith or dealer.
We supply the key. We do not promise the pairing unless the screen says so at the time you buy, and we never claim a key will start a car we have not seen.
What we need from you
Make, model and year, and the key itself where you still have one. A key we can read is always a better starting point than a description.
If you have no key at all, this is locksmith or dealer work — originating a key from the vehicle is not duplication and not something a kiosk can do.

The kiosk confirms the exact key and price on screen before you pay. If the blank turns out to differ, the price changes before payment, never after.
Terms on this page
- Remote head key
- One moulded unit containing blade, transponder and buttons. Distinct from a separate remote riding alongside a plain key, and from a proximity fob with a hidden mechanical blade.
- Key programming
- Writing a key's transponder identity into the car so the two recognize each other. Separate from cutting, and on some makes restricted to the dealer network.
- All keys lost
- Originating a key with none in existence, from the lock or from the key code held against the VIN. It is a much larger job than copying a spare, which is the argument for cutting the spare first.
- VIN
- The vehicle identification number, usually visible at the base of the windscreen. It is what a key code is issued against, and it is checked against your ownership documents.
